Marisue says:  "Being willing to give your significant other some "space" is an important part of a long lasting relationship.  I think it's a matter of respecting differences, and letting short time away help each person stay in touch with 'self.'  A clinging vine can feel choking.  'Clocking-in' and accounting for time away often makes us feel imprisoned.  Let freedom ring, but softly.  Staying true to your commitments of the relationship is the connecting thread between time away and time with your partner.   Time away should never mean time to play around with the values you both hold meaningful.  I thought this article below was to the point, and it's written by a 17 year old!  Interesting young lady."

A Long Lasting Relationship

Most people build relationships that eventually fall apart after a few months. Have you ever wondered why this is so common? It is true that, usually, it is healthier to have a few relationships before finding the one partner that will be with you for the rest of your life. However, skipping from partner to partner can become a habit which evolves into a lack of commitment. In order to overcome this habit and develop a healthful, long-lasting relationship, there are three main things to follow - time distribution, respect, and communication.

Time distribution is one of the main reasons a relationship tends to end. In order to understand this, it is important to evaluate the concept of "space". A relationship is an important part of a person's life; However, it should not consume a hundred percent of your time. In a healthy relationship, each person should distribute their time with friends, with family, with his or her partner, and time to be by themselves equally. This doesn't mean, however, that you should not spend any time with your partner, but the correct amount of time. By distributing time equally you will be giving your partner the right amount of space needed for him or her to keep his or her interest on you active. Your partner will be able to miss you when you are not around and will often treat you nicer when you are together, keeping the flame of the relationship alive.

Besides time distribution, respect is another important aspect in a healthy, long-lasting relationship. You need to respect others and especially, respect yourself. Discussing once in a while and having different opinions about certain topics is normal, and is what makes a bond ina relationship stronger. However, neither of these two situations are an excuse to disrespect your partner. Verbal aggression is common in most relationships; People tend to become mad during discussions and start shouting and insulting their partner. Constant shouting and insulting may turn out to be psychological damage. Sometimes, this verbal aggression may even turn into physical aggression. By respecting someone, you need to be ale to understand their emotions, points of view, and situations, without hurting them neither verbally nor physically.

The most important aspect in a long-lasting relationship is communication. Communication is the key to a successful relationship. Being able to talk to your partner is very important. Communication consists mainly in telling your partner what your feelings are about a certain situation, without keeping things that may evolve into resentment to yourself. People who don't communicate tend to become frustrated easier, and then use another resource to get away with things: lying. Trust is based on communication. Lying instantly kills trust, which eventually destroys the relationship. By communicating correctly, you ensure you and your partner trust each other completely and feel comfortable talking to each other, no matter how complicated the situation is.

Time distribution, respect towards your partner and yourself, and correct communication are key issues to address in order to keep a relationship alive. Other common situations such as cheating and getting bored of your partner usually derive from a lack of these three things. Relationships are hard work, and lately there are a limit number of relationships that last for a very long time, if not forever. Even in complicated situations, you should never give up on the person you love; You should give your greatest effort in order to find a balance that will make you and your partner happy and satisfied.
